Getting rid of unwanted hair is something we do almost every day.

Hair removal methods can be very painful while others are completely pain free. Some last for a few days while others last for years.  Luckily some can even last forever.

Here we will summarize the most common methods and let you choose which one best fits you.

(Hair that is removed from the root provides increased time between repeated shaving, waxing, plucking, laser removal, and electrolysis.  The secret is to pull or “kill” the root of the hair follicle.)

Recently, many people have decided to invest in Laser Hair Removal. It is intended to be permanent but very often the patient needs to return every 6 to 12 months for regular maintenance.

Laser Hair Removal is a method of using a laser directed through the skin to the hair follicle. It then stops growing.  This type of hair removal is long lasting and large areas of skin can be treated at the same time. The treatment is nearly pain free, but some possible side effects are inflammation and redness. To help reduce inflammation cold packs may be applied on the treated area.

The main requirement for Laser Hair Removal is that one’s hair must be darker than the surrounding skin. Also, the lighter the patient’s skin the better the outcome.  Very dark pigmented people absorb too much laser energy in their skin. Tan patients with dark hair are recommended to wait until their tan fades before beginning treatment.

Laser Hair Removal is still new and prices can be pretty expensive. For best results, it is recommended that the patient receives four treatment sessions. The price of one session can usually be around $500 for most anatomic areas. This includes the bikini, underarms, etc. Bigger anatomic areas like your back and legs will cost more.

Electrolysis is another form of permanent hair removal. Some people, very few actually, have regrowth of hair. In fact, the Food and Drug Administration and the American Medical Association recognize electrolysis as the only permanent method of hair removal. Many states prohibit the use the electrolysis and electric needles.

How Electrolysis works:

Over a series of several appointments, a professional electrologist inserts a needle into the follicle and sends an electric current through the hair root, killing it. The process is time consuming and expensive. It can be very painful. Modern electrolysis methods have reduced the discomfort to a mere tingling. Due to the pain of the procedure most people do only small areas such as; the upper lip, eyebrows, and underarms.

It is also recommended that you find  a trained professional, otherwise your skin could be damaged. There is also a risk of infection from the needles and other instruments if not properly sterilized.

A single session may take a total of 4 to 10 hours. The bikini line may take 8 to 16 hours. The cost ranges from $25 to $150 an hour for treatment. Prices will vary. The total cost for your face is
between $2000 and $20000.

Temporary methods of removing hair.

*****

One of the longest lasting temporary methods is Waxing. It is also one of the most painful. A warm or cool wax is spread on the area of skin where the treatment is desired. A cloth strip is applied over the wax and quickly pulled off in the opposite direction of hair growth. The root and hair is removed.

Because the hair is pulled out at the root, this process can lasts 3 to 6 weeks.  One can experience temporary redness, inflammation, and bumps after waxing.  In order for the treatment to work the individuals hair must be at least a quarter of an inch. When the hair grows back it is usually thinner, softer, and less noticeable.  The most common places for waxing are the legs, eyebrows and bikini line.

Waxing is fairly cheap. Kits are readily available in drugstores and grocery stores. It can also be done by professionals which will cost a bit more.
